Bonding

What can i do to stop my male indian ringneck from thinking im his partner? he’s driving me crazy and wont let me out of his sight.

Answer:

Hi Denice,

Parrots can become very demanding when they are closely bonded with a human. We are generally at fault for this because of the way we handle them. When you handle your bird, you need to limit any petting to head scratches. Don’t pet his body anywhere, but especially not on the chest, lower back or anywhere around the base of the tail. He needs to be in his cage except for when you are handling him. Make sure he has a large cage with plenty of toys to keep him busy. If you allow him to roam free in the house, you need to stop. When you leave the room, ignore him if he screams. If you go back and tell him to stop, he is getting attention even if it is negative. It will take a while to teach him that you can’t handle him all the time, but he needs to learn this.
