Breeding

Hi, I’ve had my zebra finches now for at 3 months. They live in a big cage in the house. They have built a beautiful nest in the last month, but they are not mating/breeding. But they are grooming each other sleep side by side. I was wondering if you could please give me some advice. I have moved them now to a quite room. It is now spring here. Thank you.

Answer:

Hi Liezl,

Hopefully you only have a single pair in the cage? You can’t breed with more than one pair in the cage. Moving them should probably help. Just give them plenty of privacy and they will breed when they are ready. You can start feeding an egg food – either egg with the shell washed, crushed and cooked with them or buy a commercial dried egg food made for finches.

Thank you for asking Lafeber,

Brenda
