Bring birds on trip or leave at home?

I’m heading to a cottage for a week and I’m wondering what is the best option for my budgie and lovebird. At home they each have a spacious flight cage. Both cages cannot fit in my car. I could bring them with me in two small travel cages, but they’d be in these cages for a week at the cottage. If I leave them here, my mom who lives nearby can look in on them every day and make sure they have food and water, but they will otherwise be alone. I don’t know if it’s better for them to be with me in small cages/stress of travelling, or stay home in a familiar environment but mostly alone (except for each other, they are side by side). Thanks for advice!

Answer:

Hi,

Your little guys will be fine at home, since you have someone to take care of them. It’s best if she can come by in the morning and turn on the lights and just make sure they have clean water and some food. Then late afternoon or evening, she could check again and turn off the lights. They would not do well leaving the lights off or on the entire time, and the thermostat should be set on what they are used to. You can have her turn on some music or TV during the day if you think it would be too quiet. Generally birds can travel OK, but they are usually better off staying at home as long as there is someone to check in on them twice a day. They will be happy when you get home!
