budgie – Loosing Feathers


please help, my budgie is loosing too many feathers and my vet confirmed she is not malting and simply he is not sure what it could be. l am giving her calcium and probiotics. please if there is anything l can do to help her.

Hi Nassera,

Your budgie may be pulling out her own feathers, but it is also possible that she has a disease called Psittacine Beak & Feather Disease(PBFD). There is a test that your Vet can run to confirm this. You might try doing a search for images of budgies with this disease to see if they look the same as your bird. While there is not a cure, birds with this disease can live a fairly normal life. The disease is contagious to other birds. Birds can carry the disease without symptoms, but an illness or trauma may cause the disease to surface. When she laid eggs, this may have weakened her system and caused the disease to emerge. Unfortunately, whether this is PBFD or Feather Destructive Disorder, there is no quick fix or treatment. If she doesn’t have PBFD, the Vet might do a biopsy or run other tests to check for internal or skin infections. I hope the Vet can find the cause and help your little budgie.
