Budgies breaking their eggs

Answer:

Hi Kanak,

If you want to breed your birds, you can only have one pair of birds in the cage. When you have several birds in a cage they should not be given any type of nest. Breeding birds are very territorial. They will fight each other and raid each other’s nests, destroying eggs and killing chicks. So you need to put each pair in a separate cage if you want them to breed. They will need a nest box attached to the outside of the cage as high as possible. And they need to be on a nutritionally balanced diet like pellets or our foraging diets. A loose seed mix will not provide the nutrition they need. They also need dark leafy greens and chopped veggies. When they are set up for breeding, they need an egg food daily – you can cook an egg with the shell washed, crushed and cooked with the egg. The pairs should not be able to see each other. Each pair needs a private, quite place for breeding. Some birds will not breed if there are other birds around them.
