Hi Piyali,
Birds are incapable of getting pregnant – they lay eggs which may or may not be fertile. They only form one egg at a time, then the egg takes 48 hours to form and then she lays the egg. So at no time does she have a lot of eggs inside of her. There can be complications where an egg doesn’t come out, and a second egg may form behind it. But if an egg or eggs get stuck inside of her, she will usually die within a day or two without veterinary intervention to remove the egg.
It is not good for her to lay eggs more than twice a year. Parakeets use a nest box, and the nest box should be taken down between each clutch, whether the eggs hatch or not. Then the pair should rest for 6 months before you give the box back to them. They should never have a nest available all year long or the female will keep laying eggs over and over until she dies. Has you female been laying eggs often? Why do you think she is pregnant – which again, she can’t be. If her abdomen is swollen, then you should take her to an Avian Vet to see what is wrong with her. If she has been laying eggs over a period of time, I would take the nest away and rest the pair for at least 6 months.
A good diet is very important. A seed diet will not provide the nutrition she needs to breed and lay eggs. She needs a nutritionally balanced diet which would be pellets. Also leafy greens, veggies and some fruit. When they have the nest box and are breeding, then you should feed an egg food – cooked egg with the shell washed, crushed and cooked with the eggs or a commercial dry egg food.
Thank you for asking Lafeber,
Brenda
