Canary free flight

Whenever I clean my canarys’ cages, I let them out for a free flight. But I haven’t been successful getting them back in the cage without causing stress. I catch them under a fly net and guide them back to the cage. I’m afraid I have tried multiple things other than that: food in the cage, waiting a while… it hasn’t worked and I want so much to tame them, I love them so much!

Answer:

Hi Batz,

Canaries are not the type bird that you can tame. In some rare cases, there are tame canaries, but generally these will be hand reared chicks. When you chase them with a net, they feel like you are a predator trying to kill them. It causes a lot of stress, so it is better not to let them out anymore. If they need more room, then get them a larger cage. I would not keep trying to make them tame. You are only causing them a lot of stress by trying to handle them. Canaries are a bird to enjoy by watching them and listening to the song. They do not have the desire for human contact like many parrots have.
