Cockateil

I have 2 cockateil birds and recently had 2 baby’s and I wanted to know why one baby is getting fed more then the other? The one not getting fed is starting to look week and won’t grow for the time been I’m looking for a way to feed it.

Answer:

Hi,

Because the eggs are laid every other day, they hatch the same way, so each chick is a different age. If there are 4 or 5 eggs in the clutch, the last to hatch will be a lot smaller than the first. If these two chicks are just a day apart, there should not be much size difference. If one hatched and then it was several days before the next, there is a big difference, and since the eggs in between failed to hatch, it can be a problem. The first to hatch is a lot bigger and stronger, and the parents might not notice the smaller chick. Or there may be something wrong with the smaller chick. Usually if you hand feed one, you should remove the larger bird. Sometimes there is nothing you can do and the little one might not make it. Again there could just be something wrong with it and in that case, nothing will help.
