Cockatiel

My cockatiel is month old and its parents stopped feeding it so I separated it and gave some millet to it and it started eating it. So is it actually eating it or just breaking the seeds I can’t actually tell?

Answer:

Hi Hasan,

Your cockatiel can’t be weaned at only a month old. He needs formula and can’t survive unless you are able to hand feed him or the parents start feeding him again. If this was the only chick, and they will not take care of it, take their nest box down so they don’t lay eggs again right now. They should be rested for at least 6 months between clutches. If they fail to care for the chicks again, I would not breed this pair anymore. Parent will stop caring for a chick sometimes if it is sick, or if they have been allowed to breed too young – under two years old. And some birds never make good parents.
