Cockatiel and parakeet

Hi my name is Breanna my mom has a pearl cockatiel and recently got a parakeet but the parakeet keeps biting the cockatiel we have a separate cage that the parakeet came in and we are sure that the cocktail is a female and the parakeet is a male she had the cockatiel way before she got the parakeet and the parakeet has not been messed with we eventually got them in one cage and we might not be able to get him back in his own cage. Would you please give us some advice on what to do about it?

Answer:

Hi Breanna,

I would separate the birds. These species can get along in very large cages, but it doesn’t sound like these two are getting along. If the parakeet gets too aggressive the cockatiel may end up hurting him. You can use a light towel or wear a glove to gently pick him up and place him back in his own cage.

Thank you for asking Lafeber,

Brenda
