Cockatiel breeding

My male and female were breeding, he is biting the back of her neck and it was bleeding bad, she looks a bit beat up but she is still sitting on eggs. I had to take him out, she was trying to get away from him. Will she be able to still hatch and care for them without the male?

Answer:

Hi Brenda,

In a situation like this, you should rotate the parents letting one sit during the day, and one at night, which is how they normally incubate the eggs. Sometimes after a few days of this, the male will calm down and can go back with the hen. Are both birds over 2 years old? If not, this may be the issue. Young males tend to only want to mate and not care for eggs or chicks. He may be trying to force her to breed. If he is over 2, but doesn’t settle down to help anymore, then it might be best not to breed this pair again.

Thank you for asking Lafeber,

Brenda
