Hi,
You should never let your pairs have another clutch right after they have had chicks. The nest box should be removed as soon as the chicks have left the box. The parents should then be rested for 6 months from breeding. You should limit each pair to only 2 clutches per year, with a 6 month rest in between every time. In the wild, they do not continue to breed because the season changes and they leave the nesting area until the next year. In captivity, since they do not experience a food shortage, they will continue to breed literally until the hen dies from laying too many eggs. She loses protein and calcium with each egg she forms and lays, so she needs time to recover after every clutch, whether the eggs hatch or not. So please remove those nest boxes each time and don’t allow this ongoing breeding anymore. Not only will the hen be at risk, but the chicks will be less healthy and less likely to survive.
Thank you for asking Lafeber,
