Cockatiel eating chick hair

Why do my male cockatiel eat hair of his chick

Answer:

Hi Zimi,

If the chicks are still in the nest, this is something that some parents do. They get carried away while preening the chicks. Generally they do not hurt them. Sometimes they might draw some blood, but as long as they are not digging into the chick’s skin and seriously hurting them, then it’s OK. If the chicks have left the nest and are weaned, then the parents are ready for them to leave. Remove the nest box because the parents need to rest 6 months before you let them breed again. And then move the chicks to a new cage if they are eating on their own.
