Cockatiel scratching its feathers, probably mites

My cockatiel has been scratching itself frequently, and I found some tiny red mites around the cage. Probably the cockatiel has mites, although it doesn’t have any crusty areas on the beak or feet. What is a good remedy for mites?

Answer:

Hi,

Cockatiels scratch and preen a lot normally. However if you are sure you have seen mites, you need to take the bird to a Vet to determine the type of mite and treatment. Red mites are usually a bloodsucking mite. They are very difficult to get rid of and you should never attempt over the counter remedies. The bird may need several treatments by the Vet, and the cage and environment needs to be thoroughly cleaned. These mites can live for several weeks in the cage or environment.
