Cockitiel Behavior

I’ve had my cockatiel for about a week. It was hand fed by the breeder, who I know personally. I have been putting my hand into the cage to get it used to me but it won’t let me get near it. I am retired and I am home most of the time. Do you have any advise.

Answer:

Hi Tony,

Did you handle the bird at the breeder’s? Or is this a little bit older bird who wasn’t handled much after being weaned? Generally you should be able to handle a hand fed bird already. But he may just need a little more time to settle in. It may be that you are unsure and this makes the bird nervous. My first suggestion is to ask the breeder to show you some handling tips. It is important for the bird’s wings to be clipped, at least until he has bonded with you. Other wise he will just fly away.

I can also provide some links on taming and training that can help you understand his behavior and learn how to handle him.
