Cockteil is taking off his own feathers

I just got a cockatiel as a gift from my friend. He is not old.,must be around 2-4 months. He is cleaning his own feathers by his beak and in this process he takes off his feathers.

Answer:

Hi Mansi,

It is normal for the occasional feather to come out when a bird is grooming and preening itself. Unless there are any bare spots or exposed skin, then the feather loss is normal. If he is truly plucking feathers and causing bald areas, then this is not normal, especially for such a young bird, and he needs to be taken to an Avian Vet as soon as possible.

Thank you for asking Lafeber,

Brenda
