Conures that mated

Hi, I have a male and female conure that are free flying, I have had them both for 7 yrs. And they have never mated before today. I caught them mating and not sure what to do next. Do I get a nest box and if so do they both have to be together in the box. They have always slept separately in there cage with a slide out side if I wanted to let them stay in one cage, but I have not ever done that.

Answer:

Hi,

Mating does not necessarily result in egg laying. And even if she lays eggs, you do not have to let her sit on them. If you want them to breed, they need to be confined to the same cage throughout the breeding process. Once any chicks have left the nest box, you remove it and rest the parents for at least 6 months. When the chicks are weaned, you need to find them new homes, or cage them separately from the parents. You can’t allow related birds to breed, and the parents generally will not tolerate offspring ocne they have been weaned.
