Defeathering and abnormal feathers in budgie chicks

Hello,
My chicks up to 15-20 days have good feathers (primary and secondary feathers was grown) but from this days their feathers specially secondary and primary feathers begin to drop and grow abnormal feathers or small feathers or don’t grow feathers at all.
Until now I have 12 affected chicks.
I take PCR test of PBFD two times and became negative.
Please help me
Thank you

Answer:

Hi,

I would highly recommend having the birds checked for Polyoma. This is a common virus in parrots and in parakeets, it can cause what was previously known as French Molt or Budgie Fledgling Disease. Your description really sounds like this to me. You should not breed your birds until you find out what is wrong here. If the chicks test positive, then the parents are positive and should not be bred ever again. Are all 12 chicks from the same pair? If so, are you resting your pair for 6months after each clutch? You can’t let a pair breed over and over. In captivity, it is necessary to remove the nest boxes and rest each pair for 6  months between each clutch, which means they should only be allowed 2 clutches per year. Over-breeding a pair can make them weak, and it can let a virus like polyoma take over.
