Hi,
You should already have been feeding a breeding diet to your pair before you hung the nest box. The hen especially needs extra nutrients to form and lay eggs, or her health gets very depleted. You need to feed them a nutritionally balanced diet such as pellets, dark leafy greens, chopped veggies, some fruit, and you can even offer some multigrain bread. If they are eating a seed diet, they will not be getting the nutrients they need. However, you can’t change the diet now. You should add all of the foods I mentioned along with what they normally eat, and hopefully they will eat the new foods, too. You also need to be feeding them an egg food daily. This can be a commercial egg food, or you can cook and egg with the shell washed, crushed and cooked with the eggs. This helps replace the calcium and protein the hen lost while laying eggs, and it is also good for the chicks. You need to put a lot of food in the cage and replenish it 2-3 times a day. They will eat more each day as they feed the chicks. If they don’t think they have enough food, they will not feed the chicks.
Thank you for asking Lafeber,
Brenda
