disease or molt?

I have a female cockatiel. She is about 4-5 years old. We are currently residing in Dubai and it is winter here. I noticed that she bas been losing a large amount of feathers over the last two days. She has been displaying normal energy levels, vocalization, and eating. However, I did notice that her poop was a bit watery a few days back- which is turning back to normal now. She lives in the same cage with another male cockatiel who is a few years younger than her i believe. They do not get along too well. We had our budgie of 2-3 years pass away 4 months ago due to illness. I am worried if my female cockatiel is going through a disease? She lays eggs occasionally, although unfertilized. We give the birds multivitamin drops in their feed. We also have calcium and zinc supplements in their cage. Is it normal to lose a lot of feathers during this time of the year? She hasnt been around other birds so chances of her contacting bugs are also low.

Answer:

Hi,

They can go through a heavy molt at any time of year. But it sounds more like the results of fighting. You need to separate these birds if they don’t get along. It’s very stressful for birds to share a cage if they do not get along well. Health issues can also cause feather loss, but you would need to take the bird to an Avian Vet.
