Dr. Echols Webinar Beak Trims

Addressing what he wouldn’t speak about regarding beak trims. For the bird who needs a monthly trim, due to a lower overgrown beak, I assess that it is painful having the beak trimmed, when we always been told it’s like a nail trim. I KNEW it was painful.

Answer:

Hi Tammy – here is Dr. Echols reply:

What I hope to provide is a map as to where we can trim to reduce the likelihood of damaging nerves.  We have known for a long time that beak trims (especially if excessive) can result in pain.  The team on this project (which includes me) is dedicated to work on this project as we recognize what it means for birds requiring beak trims.  Stay tuned…

Hi Tammy,

Beak trims can be done without causing excessive pain, possibly discomfort at the most. When it is required for a bird due to a beak injury or deformity, it is good to do this regularly, but only to the extent to help the bird. Parrots have been trained to accept trims without having to restrain the bird. This can be done with positive reinforcement and again, care as to how much work is done on the beak.
