Hi Jean – here is Dr. Echols’ reply:

These are complex problems. So far, the two most common associated diseases are nerve damage (usually related to spinal column arthritis, osteoporosis, trauma, etc) and atherosclerosis (leading to decreased blood flow to the wing).  There are many other disorders to consider.  However,  nerve and vascular disease seem to be leading causes.
