I have 2 african grey’s that I hand reared in 2004. They started laying eggs last year 2022 and that is when I realised that they are both females. My concern is that in the last 12 -16 months they have laid eggs 5 times with a clutch of 5 eggs on average. There is no box and we remove the eggs after a few days. Should I separate them?

Hi,
You may need to do that, but first you can try some other things. Limit their light to 8-10 hours a day, by covering the cage early in the evening. They should not have anything they may view as a nest – no boxes, bird huts or tents, etc. Don’t let them shred paper or cardboard. If you handle these birds, limit any petting to only the head and neck. Don’t let them roam around the house or get into dark cozy spaces. This is much like the way they would look for a nesting site. Rearrange their toys and move the cage to another spot in the room. You can try hormone treatment – your Vet can give them hormone shots or an implant. You may want to watch out webinars on Greys and hormones to get an idea of what may be triggering this egg laying.
