Thank you for reaching out to Ask Lafeber. Even older female parakeets can occasionally lay an egg for the first time when their hormones are stimulated, and this can happen even after many years without any prior egg‑laying. Factors such as extended daylight hours, seasonal hormonal changes, or environmental cues can trigger a hen to produce an egg, even without a male present. This is normal and does not necessarily indicate a health issue. Please leave the egg with her for now to prevent additional laying, ensure she has access to calcium, and monitor her for any signs of straining or discomfort. If you notice anything concerning, we recommend contacting an avian veterinarian for guidance.
