fat bird

my cockitiel is over weight seed stays in cage 24 hours so switching too these how many a day at twice a day so he loses weight but not starve.

Answer:

Hi Debra,

Unless your Vet has specifically put the bird on a diet and meal plan, food should never be limited or restricted. If you are converting your bird from a seed mix to our Nutri-Berries, Avi-Cakes or pellets, once the bird is converted, he will naturally lose weight. Birds overeat when they are fed a diet that isn’t balanced. When they eat a nutritionally balanced diet, they do not eat as much because their nutritional needs are met so they stop eating when they are satisfied. They can’t get satisfied on a loose seed mix, so they keep eating. Once converted, if it is Nutri-Berries, he may eat 6-12 daily and with Avi-Cakes, about 4-8. But again, it isn’t recommended to only feed twice a day, especially for a bird like a cockatiel, because they do have a very high metabolism and you can cause them to get too hungry, as well as have food anxiety because none is available.

Thank you for asking Lafeber,
