Feather barbs – Dr. Lamb Webinar Feb 10

What does it mean when the part of barbs (and/or barbules?) closest to the shaft are thinner than the outer parts (about 1 mm on each side all along the shaft)?

Answer:

It’s just a part of the normal architecture of the feather. I am not sure of the exact physiologic reason why this evolved for the feather but I am sure there probably is a good one! Nature has evolved some very interesting and logical things though I personally am not sure of the exact reason for all of them.
