How do I introduce fresh foods and fruit to my parakeets?
It can take time for a bird to recognize new foods as something they can eat. Many owners offer fresh foods a few times and then give up. Most birds will learn to eat fresh foods, but they need time. You can offer the foods in different ways – chopping up or leaving it in larger pieces, cooked, raw, barely steamed. Parakeets tend to prefer greens and veggies and won’t eat much fruit. Try attaching some broccoli to the side of the cage next to a perch, or some leafy greens. Other favorites might be corn, carrots, sweet potatoes, peas and green beans. Parakeets are ground feeders in the wild, so offering veggies in a shallow dish on the cage floor can entice them. Sprinkle some of their daily food over it.
