Feeding duration

How long days should a cockteil baby be hand fed?

Answer:

Hi Tahmid,

Most cockatiels will be weaned between 8 – 12 weeks old. However, this is a gradual process which should not be rushed. At around 4 weeks, the chicks will start to pick at things around them, and this is when you can start to offer some soft foods like cooked brown rice with chopped veggies, along with the handfeeding. After another week or two you can add some pellets. You can even soak some pellets in hot water and offer them. Offer the soft foods and soaked pellets at a warm temperature – similar to the formula. The more the bird eats on its own, the less formula it will want, and eventually it will stop wanting the formula.

Thank you for asking Lafeber,

Brenda
