Feeding macaws

I have a pair of macaws. I feed them sunflower seeds, fruits & veges. How much food do they need in a day

Answer:

Hi,

Sunflower seeds are not a good diet for birds. They offer very little nutrition and mainly cause the birds to become obese. You should be feeding a nutritionally balanced diet such as pellets or our foraging diets, along with greens, fruits & veggies. You need to change them to a better diet and eventually stop offering any sunflower seeds or other loose seeds or your birds will end up dying from malnutrition. I’ll give you the link to our feeding guide and a webinar on teaching your birds to eat a good diet. As for amounts, they should always have food available. You should offer the nutritionally balanced food as 80% of the diet with 20% fresh foods. If you are feeding a balanced diet, the birds will not eat too much.
