Feeding

My lovebird who is close to a year old has been eating only seed. What can I do to encourage eating veggies and fruit. Also will eating only seeds make him or her unhealthy.

Answer:

Hi Christine,

Even if he eats fruits and veggies, he needs a better daily diet than loose seeds. Pellets are nutritionally balanced , but birds often find them boring, especially lovebirds which do eat seeds in the wild. The difference in those seeds is they are fresh and have all of their nutrients, while loose seeds you buy are generally not very fresh. Our foraging diets are balanced the same as a pellet but they contain whole fresh seeds combine with essential nutrients. I would covert him to something like this as well as continuing to offer chopped veggies and fruits and dark leafy greens. You need ti keep offering fresh foods and he will eventually try them. It can just take a whole for  bird to recognize new foods as something they can eat.

Here is a food guide to offer more suggestions.
