Female bird, no male. Appear to lay eggs.

I often find her in the corner with her tail against the cage. Or she will sit on perch in a position like she she’s going to lay an egg. She poops regularly. I just learn, I need to improve her seeds. She seems to have fleas.

Answer:

Hi Margaret,

Are you certain she is a female? You didn’t mention the species, but many male cockatiels will sit on the corner of the cage with the tail up. Regardless, females can lay eggs and eat the egg immediately. Or she may simply be hormonal, but that doesn’t mean she will lay eggs, and of course it is best that she doesn’t. If she sits with her tail pumping up and down, like she is straining, she is trying to lay an egg and having problems, so you would need to take her to a vet immediately. Birds cannot get fleas They can get mites. If you think she has mites, you need to take her to an Avian Vet to be diagnosed and treated. Mites are very rare in pet birds unless they have been kept outdoors. Birds do preen their feathers a lot, and if she is on a poor diet, such as seeds only, she will be in poor condition overall and may have itchy skin. It sounds like a trip to the Vet is in order where she can be checked out and the Vet can help you with what you should be feeding her and how to care for her in general.
