Female budgie

My budgie is 3 years old and is very aggressive! So much that I can’t lot it out of the cage while I’m in the room! She flies at me and bites not like any budgie I’ve ever had. She just attacks so I feel bad that I cannot let her out .

Answer:

Hi Barbara,

Budgies are generally aggressive like this when they are nesting. Does she have a nest? If she is a solo bird, she should not have a nest, hut, tent, box or anything she can sit in. I would recommend limiting her light to 8-10 hours a day, by covering her cage at night. Move the cage to another place in the room – you can move it once a week or whenever she starts acting up and attacking. Generally if you disrupt their routine, they will stop trying to nest. If you can have her wings trimmed, this will help, too. It will give her a chance to settle down before her feathers grow back. But basically this is hormonal behavior so you need to try to make these changes to settle her hormones down.

Thank you for asking Lafeber,

Brenda
