food preferences

I have 6 parakeets 2 of my birds which are males seem be addicted to carrots. They will choose carrots chips over their other food they don’t care much for fruit but will nibble on spinach. How do I get them interested in trying more fruits and vegetables. The other 4 birds will try spinach
but nothing else.

Answer:

Hi Sam,

Parakeets are natural ground feeders, so they will sometimes eat new foods better if offered in a shallow dish on the cage floor. If these are all in the same cage, they tend to eat better with competition. Parakeets are not big fruit eaters, but they tend to love broccoli florets, grated veggies like carrots, sweet potatoes, squash, and they love leafy greens like dark lettuces and other dark leafy greens. Another favorite is frozen mixed veggies, thawed and warmed. Offering food in an edible plate can entice them – put the veggies on a piece of whole grain bread or a large leaf of leafy lettuce(basically any lettuce but iceberg). Most owners give up too soon, so just keep offering the veggies and see if they catch on.

We have a couple of webinars you may want to check out, that have tips on getting them to eat new foods.
