Gender of parakeet

I have two parakeets and I have no idea if my parakeets are males or females. Fifi has a little bit of blue and white on it’s cere. Casper has a pinkish purple on its cere. (Both young)

Answer:

Hi Summer,

It can be very hard to determine the gender of some parakeets because there are so many mutations now. If the mutation is a solid color or one of the pastel colors, they often have a pale lavender cere that never changes color. Generally a mature male parakeet will have a blue cere and a mature female will have a white to brown cere. Since these birds are young, they may be too young to tell anyway. Try searching images of parakeets to see if you can find any that look like yours and maybe you can figure out what you have. You can always have a DNA test done which will tell their gender.
