Gluten and oat free pellets

Hi. I have a celiac in the household and am looking for a recipe or a commercially available pellets that is free from wheat, barley, rye or oats? Other grains such as quinoa, buckwheat, rice, etc are safe. Thanks!

Answer:

Thanks for reaching out to Ask Lafeber.

I’m unaware of any commercially made pellets that do not contain one or more of these ingredients.  However, birds can thrive with a loose mixture of Quinoa, Oat Groats, Hemp, Chia, and Flax seeds. You could try Spelt, however it is hulled wheat and if your bird has celiac’s, you might want to avoid any products with wheat entirely. These can be purchased in the bulk section in stores such as Whole Foods or other natural grocery stores. If can assist you further, please reach out.
