Gluten free diets

Hi,
We have a client who was diagnosed as celiac recently and her budgies are on a seed diet. Any commercial seed diet without gluten in the ingredient list you can recommend (we understand it would not be certified GF)? Or any homemade seed diet you can recommend? Owner has been trying to convert to pellets, no interest in veggies. We have recommended to keep tried for conversion and adding nutriberries/avicakes to at least reduced the dust potetial.

Answer:

Hi,

It’s good that they want to get the birds off of seed, at least due to the owner’s health. But I doubt pellets are going to be gluten free, and they do result in a lot of dust. I agree that the Nutri-Berries and Avi-Cakes would produce less dust. If you can help them understand that loose seed mixes have little nutritional value because the seeds are not fresh enough, and any added nutrients are lost when the bird removes the hulls. We only use fresh, human grade seeds with the hulls removed, combined with other human grade ingredients. Everything is coated with a nutritionally balanced binder, so the bird gets complete nutrition in very bite. Nutri-Berries & Avi-cakes are nutritionally balanced the same as pellets, but the ingredients are not ground up. I hope this helps!
