He said no to clipping

Hello we went to the vet and she asked if I wanted her wings clipped but before I could say anything my dad said no, I tried to convince him that it was only temporary but he said that clipping isn’t natural and it’s not right since clipping is now not an option, do u have any tips of bonding with verde or taking her out of the cage because I’d hate to have her confined to a cage when all she wants to do is be with me.

Answer:

Hi Morgan,

I am glad you made it to the Vet, but I’m sorry you couldn’t get Verde clipped. You can keep trying to work with her, but she will more likely do what she wants since she can just fly away. Lisa Bono is still available to help you – if you need her contact information again, let me know and I can email that to you. You never know what an individual bird will do – maybe Verde will let you handle her. But I get this question a lot – I just replied to someone who couldn’t handle their cockatiel anymore because the wing feathers grew back. I know your dad spent a lot getting you Verde and the cage, plus Vet costs. A bird in a cage isn’t “natural”, but Verde isn’t technically a wild species since she is a color mutation of the Green Cheeked Conure. She was bred and raised to be a pet. Hopefully with time either Verde or your dad will come around. You might show him this question from the cockatiel owner so he can read how letting a bird fly can cause it to no longer be a pet.
