How do I clean wooden nest box

I have a wooden nest box for my breeding pair of budgies. It has gotten covered in poo but I’m not sure exactly how to clean it without having the wood mold and avoiding toxic fumes for the birds.

Answer:

Hi,

Nest boxes can get pretty dirty, but the nest box should always be removed after each clutch and the pair allowed to rest for 6 months before returning the box. Never leave a nest box in the cage year round. Even doing this and cleaning the box after each clutch, the box can get to the point that it is better to throw it away and buy a new one. So really it depends on how bad it is. You can clean it with white vinegar and once it looks clean, let it sit in the sunlight to dry completely. But if it is really caked in poop, it’s time for a new one.
