how long do budgies stay distant for

so my budgie is 3 months old and i’ve read on here that at around this age they will become distant and not like to be handled and such but will return to their regular behaviour eventually, but it didn’t say how long this behaviour is expected to last, so if anyone could tell me that would be great. Thanks!

Answer:

Hi Taylor,

You must have misunderstood something you read. Budgies and any parrot can have behavioral issues when they are hormonal, particularly when they first reach maturity. For a budgie, this would be 8-12 months in general, and not all birds react this way to their hormones. Some become more affectionate, some can get aggressive and some do not exhibit any changes. If your young budgie is not acting the same with you, there is another reason. Do you just have the one bird? If you have more than one together, then they do end up bonding and get to the point that they no longer want to be handled. Has something changed in the home – new pet, new routine? Birds can get jealous and they can get upset if there are too many changes at one time. The best thing to do is be patient and talk to him a lot, and try to figure out if something around him is different. He may have lost trust for some reason, so you need to be patient and give him time to accept you again.
