How long will feathers take to heal?

My budgie/parakeet accidentally got on a mouse glue trap in the house. He has lost a lot of feathers including his tail. He is safely off the trap by the help of olive oil, we cleaned him as good as we can with dawn dish soap and he can still walk. How long will he recover and what are somethings that could help? I’m deeply concerned.

Answer:

Hi,

Please get rid of any glue traps. As you found out the hard way, they are a risk to pets and they are an extremely cruel way to get rid of pests. They also pose a risk to wildlife if they are placed outside.

You did the right thing as far as how you got him out and then cleaned the oil off with Dawn. If he lost a lot of feathers, the main concern is him regulating his body temperature. You may need to partially cover his cage. The feathers will not grow back until any damaged feathers have been molted. He should start growing in feathers where he lost them, and this can take a few weeks. Protect him from falling until he has his feathers back and can fly again without falling.

Thank you for asking Lafeber,

Brenda
