how to go about moving to a new home when your bird is used to being around other birds?

due to a recent breakup, i live with my parents in a house of 6 people, 3 cockatiels and one rainbow lorikeet. i’ve had my cockatiel for under a year so he’s still a baby. he’s my whole life and fills my heart with so much warmth and love, and whenever i move out i’m certain that i want to take him with me, though i often worry about this a lot. he’s used to being around so many animals and people that i’m scared he’ll get depressed which is the last thing i want. i know that i’m going to get another tiel before i move to make the process easier and give him a friend, but i still worry majorly. sometimes i think that it’ll be best to leave him with my parents but then i also think selfishly and just want to keep him with me wherever i go. i’m just looking for some tips/ advice or any experiences in regards to the situation. how should i go about this? am i worrying too much?

Answer:

Hi Kate,

If this cockatiel is bonded with you, this will be enough to keep him happy. I do not recommend a “friend” unless you plan to keep each bird in a separate cage. When you cage birds together, they typically lose interest in human companionship. You are his companion, so as long as you reassure him and give him plenty of attention, he should be fine when you move.
