How to set up breeding cabinet
I was wondering how to set up and prepare a breeding cabinet for a pair of budgies
The nest box is your last step in setting birds up for breeding. The birds must be old enough – for budgies, at least 2 years old. They need to be fed a nutritionally balanced diet – no seed mix, they need pellets, greens, veggies, fruit and once set up to breed, egg food and a cuttlebone. They must be bonded as a pair – grooming each other, sitting together, feeding each other and of course mating. Once you observe them being bonded enough to mate, then the nest box should be attached to the outside of the cage, as high as possible. You can add some aspen shavings – they must be aspen, all other wood shavings have oils or dust that can be toxic. Do not ever use hay or grasses. The aspen bedding is the best. They may kick some or all of it out – each pair has their own preferences. Make sure the cage is in a quiet place with little human contact. With most pairs, you can’t clean the cage once they are nesting. Never move the cage or clean the nest box while a pair is nesting.
