Human attachment

My cocateil was very close to my husband and my husband passed away. Chico (my bird) has completely changed. He bites is not friendly and keeps looking for behind his urn and pictures. I love Chico but he’s biting me. How can I get him to stop morning and come to me. He’s a bit old about 12/13 years old. Please help me. I miss Chico too. ❤️

Answer:

Hi,

I’m very sorry for your loss. Chico is clearly grieving, too, but can’t understand why his favorite person abandoned him. It will take time, and Chico may or may not change his behavior. But most likely, if you are patient with him and give him time, he will come around. Give him treats and attention, but don’t try to force him to be tame with you. Cockatiels are prey animals, and reaching for him can cause him to feel like he is being grabbed by a predator. Let him approach you – offer treats to entice him. Be patient. That’s the key. And keep in mind he can sense your grief and may be reacting to that. You both need time to process your loss. Try to be calm with Chico and not take it personally when he seems to reject you.
