Large clutch

Hi. My zebras hatched 5 babies. They are now almost 2 weeks old. Their nest is so small that they ate starting to fall out. Should I put them in a bigger nest? Thanks.

Answer:

Hi,

If you try to change the nest, the parents might abandon the chicks. The oldest should be mostly feathered by now, although some develop at different rates. If they leave the nest, it’s fine. You can put some paper towels over the floor grate and usually the parents will feed them and the chicks in the nest. I do want to see if you have the right type of nest, because usually 5 will be fine in the right nest. They should have the hut type nest made from woven grasses. If this is an open nest, this is the problem because they need the enclosed nest with the single opening. After all of the chicks have left the nest, take the nest out. Otherwise the parents will nest again and let the chicks die. You should not give them the nest again for 4-6 months so the pair can rest. As soon as the chicks are eating on their own, you must separate them from the parents. If you don’t have the hut type nest, be sure to get one for next time. It should be attached as high as possible in a corner of the cage, with enough room so the male can sit on top of it to guard his hen and chicks.
