long tail feather on 8yr old cockateil

8yr old cockatiel with long tail feather One tail feather about 6inches long. He is a rescue. Will it fall out? What if it breaks? The tail seems to have grown out in just few weeks. Any recommendations? Only rescued the little guy about 6 months ago. don’t want to lose him

Answer:

Hi Charlotte,

Are you saying he only has a single tail feather? I don’t quite understand the problem here. He will lose feathers off and on year round and typically go through a complete molt once or twice a year. This is when he gradually loses and grows back in all of his feathers over a few weeks. But it’s not normal to lose all but one tail feather. It sounds like something scared him and he lost the feathers or a person or animal pulled his tail feathers out. Yes, they will grow back in a few weeks.

Thank you for asking Lafeber,

Brenda
