Lory

Do you think lory and lorikeet can be fed properly in captivity? Can commercial food replace natural food at all? This is not just a different grain, but a completely different food.

Answer:

Hi Joanna,

Lorys and Lorikeets can be great pets, but they are very high maintenance, and not just because of their diet. They are messy regardless of their diet, they are very loud and they are over the top hyper active.  I have owned four, and all lived into their 30’s, so I am speaking from experience. I never fed an entirely commercial diet and I really don’t have one I can recommend. I’m not sure what is available these days, but the main issue is lack of demand. They are such a specialty bird and they simply do not fit into the average household. There have been some great commercial diets that have been discontinued because they have a high production cost versus low sales. As much as I loved mine, I don’t recommend them as pets unless you have a lot of time to dedicate to feeding and cleaning up after them as well as giving them a lot of attention.

Thank you for asking Lafeber,

Brenda
