Hi Manon,
Lovebirds are a species of parrots, and all parrots naturally like to chew and explore. This is why pet birds must be in a cage when they can’t be supervised. Otherwise the bird is eventually going to get into something he shouldn’t and end up dead. He needs a large cage with plenty of toys to play with and chew on. He doesn’t know what is and isn’t safe in a house, so he needs to be kept in the cage for his own safety unless someone is watching him. He should not be allowed to chew on plants or the soil. Many houseplants are toxic for birds and the soil can contain chemicals that could also make the bird sick or kill him. He would not know he should chew on electrical items and if he chews a cable or bites into an outlet, he will die. He isn’t going to stop chewing and exploring because this is a natural behavior. So he needs a large cage to explore and fun toys to keep him busy.
Thank you for asking Lafeber,
Brenda
