Male cockatiel

May I put a friend with my male cockatiel because I can’t put them with this Mum and Dad because they fight all the time

Answer:

Hi Jonathan,

You are correct – you can’t keep offspring with parents once they are weaned. The parents will instinctively start trying to drive the offspring away once they are weaned. This is nature’s way of preventing inbreeding in the wild. Also, when you have a breeding pair or just 2 birds in a cage, you can’t add a third bird because they will fight. Having an off number of birds together rarely works because they form bonds and the odd bird gets left out and often bullied. As for putting another bird with your male, it depends. If the male is a tame pet, I would not recommend it. The birds will end up bonding and your male will stop being tame. If he isn’t tame, you can try introducing them and see if they get along. But again, keep birds in even numbers.
