Managing Right Side Heart Failure

My Moluccan Cockatoo has right side heart failure. She’s weighed and gets 5 meds twice a day and I also palpitate her abdomen to get an idea if fluid is accumulating. She eats very well and once she reaches 800 grams her abdomen becomes firm I am unable to palpitate it as well. When her abdomen is firm, can you give me some tips on how to palpitate her abdomen and distinguish from accumulated fluid and food in the intestines?

Answer:

Hi,

I’m sorry about your bird’s diagnosis. It sounds like you are managing it well with your Vet. Your vet should also be able to help you with this question. It is not something we can help with. I would suggest making an appointment so that your Vet can demonstrate and explain the difference.

Take care,

Brenda
