Mating

Currently have 2 male Cockateels & planning on getting 2 female. Can they all be in same cage or separate 1 female with 1 male in separate cage

Answer:

Hi,

They may all do well in the same cage as long as the cage is large enough, has plenty of extra food & water dishes in different places in the cage, and toys for them to play with. However, if your plan is to breed them, then you can only have one pair per cage. If the 4 are together, never give them anything that they might try to use as a nest. If you want to breed them and have each pair in a separate cage, do not give them a nest box until they are at least 2 years old.

Also if these two males are bonded with each other, they may not accept females. If you introduce females, you need to do it at the same time – never have an odd number of birds together – and watch them very closely. You might have to split the pairs into separate cages to get the males to pay attention to the females instead of each other. Same sex bonds can be very strong in captive birds.
